Housing minister Kit Malthouse has announced £6m of funding to boost the delivery of new affordable homes while the One Public Estate programme is also set to receive a fresh cash injection.
The money will be delivered over two years to the Community Led Homes Programme, an initiative run by four housing charities that aims to provide local groups with the funding, training, and advice required to build “high-quality, affordable homes”.
On 15 February, the government revealed plans for the development of 25,000 new homes and two days previous to that, plans to create new towns in the UK.
Malthouse says: “For too long, governments of all stripes have failed to build the homes our country needs, but we are turning that around.
“Last year we delivered over 222,000 homes but we need to deliver more good quality properties, and the community-led housing programme will help us do just that.
“Alongside £6m of funding, the programme will also provide crucial training and advice to local groups, ensuring that we are not just building better homes but also building better communities.”
Community Led Homes head Samantha Jones adds: “Communities want to play their part in tackling the country’s affordable housing crisis and many are forming community led housing groups to do so.
“In the next five years the movement will build over 5,000 affordable homes. We’ve created the Community Led Homes programme to help this figure increase further still, and in time, for community led housing to become a mainstream housing option.”
Opening up public sector land
In further news, as part of the government’s £250m investment towards the construction of 25,000 houses across England, £15m will go towards the introduction of 10,000 new homes over 100 sites through the One Public Estate programme.
According to the government, the development plan will see 14,000 new jobs created and save taxpayers £37m in running costs.
The ministry of housing, communities and local government adds that the One Public Estate programme, which opens public sector land for development, has already freed up land for the development for 3,336 new homes and created 5,745 new jobs.
Initiatives in the new plan include construction in Waltham Forest, with the redevelopment of Whipps Cross Hospital and public and private ownership housing developments in the Forest Road Corridor.
In addition, the plans will involve releasing land around Kettering railway station in Northamptonshire for the development of new houses, while Worcestershire is set to see new housing developments around Redditch station.
Furthermore, projects in Devon and Torbay include the regeneration of land around St David’s station in Exeter.
The minister for implementation Oliver Dowden comments: “Getting the best use out of publicly-owned land can help to regenerate our towns and cities and give people improved access to the services they need.
“This programme shows that when government works smarter, with public authorities coming together, taxpayers get better value for money, new jobs are created, and space is freed-up for vitally needed new homes.”
Chairman of the local government association Lord Porter says: “This latest round will see the programme now deliver more than 650 projects in total, all of which support councils to work with the wider public sector to deliver the best public services and place for their local communities.
“The delivery of new homes remains a national priority and with 95 per cent of councils now part of the programme.”
The minister of state for housing Kit Malthouse adds: “The One Public Estates programme will not only help more people find a home of their own, but also help create jobs and save taxpayers’ money.”
